The self-image, our subconscious representation of what we believe about ourselves, is the guidance system for our lives. If our self-image tells us we can do it, we can do it, if our self-image says you are no good and are a failure, you can be sure defeat will follow. Unfortunately, life is not always perfect. A subconcious guidance system is not immune to the mistakes of even the best, most well intentioned parents because they make mistakes, too.

The truth is, while we may have been fed information during our childhood by others or even ourselves that says we are not talented, the truth is each one of us is a unique creation of God that contains talents and positive attributes that are unique to us which can have a positive aspect in the world. We all have value and we need to realize that.

The key to putting a winning mental self-image together is to first understand and accept the fact that we do have strengths. Yes, each one of us is talented in some way. The next step is to figure out what they are. A great tool to help you in this journey is the book Now, Discover Your Strengths. Everyone has strengths and this book helps us understand how that’s possible. Furthermore, we need to understand them and play to them in our daily lives. In the last few years human behavior research has shown that it is better to focus on your strengths instead of trying to improve your weaknesses.

The book also contains an assessment which you can take online which will tell you what your strengths are. Once you gain that understanding, you can use that information to explore how you can use those strengths in your daily life. This information is extremely valuable in the context of coach/client relationship. So if you are working with a coach, inquire about using this assessment to explore what your strengths are and how to use them in your daily life.
